Empowering the Community Transforming the City. |

Welcome to more than just a precinct – Welcome to a community that cares, supports, and stands together for the betterment of all.

About Us

Welcome to ECID – a dedicated community hub where safety, support, and connection thrive. At the core of our mission is a profound commitment to the well-being of every individual who calls our neighborhood home. Beyond being traditional law enforcers, we embrace a holistic approach to community care that extends far beyond the badge.

Our Vision

In our precinct, we recognise that genuine safety is built on trust, collaboration, and a sincere concern for the people we serve. We are not just law enforcement; we are neighbours, friends, and advocates working hand-in-hand with you to create a secure and nurturing environment.

Community Involvement

Community involvement is the cornerstone of our precinct’s ethos. Through neighbourhood watch programs, outreach initiatives, and active engagement with residents, we are building a strong network of support. Your safety becomes a shared responsibility, and together, we forge a bond that goes beyond traditional law enforcement boundaries.

Resources Hub

But our commitment doesn’t stop there. Our precinct serves as a hub of resources, offering assistance and guidance beyond crime prevention. From organising educational workshops to providing access to social services, we are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for everyone in our community.

The ECID Experience

Unique Partnership

Embracing innovation, ECID stands as the first public/private partnership within Ekurhuleni. Our Board of Directors, led by the dedicated Mark Verhoogt, is elected by members who generously volunteer their time to serve the community.

Membership & Governance

While ECID membership is optional, it grants voting rights at general meetings, providing a platform for members to actively shape the future of the CID. The ECID levy, compulsory under the Act, ensures the financial support necessary for our collective vision.

The ECID Area

Our influence spans from Horwood Street to 7th Street, encompassing 7th Avenue, 8th Avenue, Van Riebeeck Avenue, 10th Avenue, and Voortrekker Avenue. In 2023, a choice was made to expand the Edenvale CID by incorporating an Eastleigh area, encompassing Fountain Road, Plantation Road, Central Road, Edendale Road, and Main Road. This territory reflects our commitment to both the immediate improvement district and the broader Edenvale community.

Support and hope for new beginnings

It is estimated that 3,500 babies are abandoned every year in South Africa. What makes this statistic even harder to swallow, is that these are only the figures for the children who survive. Figures compiled in Gauteng show that for every abandoned child found alive, two are found dead. A recent Medical Research Council study on child homicide reveals that children in South Africa are at the highest risk of unnatural deaths in the first six days of life. Research shows that 65 per cent of abandoned children are newborns, and 90 per cent are under the age of one. Many abandoned babies have already survived a late-term abortion. 52 to 58 per cent of SA abortions are illegal (up to150 000 per year). 70 per cent of abandonments are unsafe and many babies are never found. These are the reasons that the Tree of Hope was created. The East Rand was devoid of any space where parent’s intent on abandoning their child, could do so safely. In recent years, 3 children have simply been left at the gate of Monte Waldi Nursery School. One child was almost missed. It was a Friday, and that gate is largely unused in the evenings. Only by sheer luck was the child seen. The Tree of Hope works closely with the SAPS and Edenvale Welfare to ensure that any baby abandoned has the best chance of a good forever family.
